Bespoke Welsh Holiday Breaks For The Discerning Traveller

New products showcased at RWS

Posted: 24th July 2017 By Take Me To Wales

A new batch of food and drink products will be showcasing the Welsh Protected Food Name ‘family’ at the Royal Welsh Show until thursday.

During the first half of 2017 six new Welsh products were awarded protection under the coveted European Union Protected Food Name (EUPFN) Scheme, bringing Wales’ overall tally of protected products to 14.

The six new products : Traditionally Reared Pedigree Welsh Pork (TSG), West Wales Coracle Caught Salmon (PGI), West Wales Coracle Caught Sewin (PGI), Welsh Laverbread (PDO), Traditional Welsh Perry (PGI), and Traditional Welsh Cider (PGI), will join the existing eight Welsh PFN products being showcased at the Royal Welsh Showground.

The EUPFN Scheme was introduced in 1993 to protect food and drink products on a geographical basis, and among the famous products protected are Champagne, Parma Ham, Melton Mowbray Pork Pies, Welsh Lamb, and Welsh Beef.

There are three designations within the scheme: Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG). In addition to the 14 Welsh products already protected by the scheme, there are several others Welsh products in various stages of the PFN application process.

The Welsh Government is committed to supporting Welsh producers to achieve Protected Food Name status and develop collaborative opportunities to promote the Welsh “family” of food and drink products.
